With worldwide record sales in the millions and dozens of Grammy awards to its credit (in 1982 and 1983 the group won consecutive Grammy Awards in the Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Duo or Group category for, respectively, “Route 66? and “Why Not!”), The Manhattan Transfer holds a distinct place in the history of fusion jazz. Forty years after their first recording, The Manhattan Transfer continues to stretch the classics of Artie Shaw, George Gershwin, Chick Corea, and others, to fit its incomparable live stage act.
In addition to the above-listed public main stage performance, this artist will participate in the Torggler Summer Vocal Institute (TSVI) at Christopher Newport University. TSVI is a new, prestigious two-week residency program for 50 emerging young singers who wish to train with world-renowned vocal pedagogues and performers each summer. TSVI is made possible by a generous gift from George and Mary Torggler, retired entrepreneurs and longtime supporters of the arts and education. For more information, visit cnu.edu/tsvinstitute.
