Organized in 1979, The Shanghai Ballet found instant fame performing “The White-Haired Girl,” a classical, 20th-century Chinese ballet. Over its 33-year existence, the company has established a predominant position in the international ballet world by creating and staging new folk-styled ballet productions of “The Butterfly Lovers” (Xin Lili) and “A Sigh of Love” (Bertrand d’At). Performed for the first time at the Ferguson Center, “The Butterfly Lovers” is a four-act Asian story of “Romeo and Juliet,” a perfect combination of Western ballet and Chinese dancing complete with stunning costumes and scenery. The company’s repertoire includes classical ballets, more modern pieces and many pas de deux from classical ballets.
